About Butler & Co

History: Julie Butler founded the firm in 1986 from the family farmhouse in Bramdean, opened the Alresford office in 1992.

    Career started at Butler & Co in 2007. Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (FCA) and the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT). Extensive experience across all aspects of rural businesses and operations with focus on Farming & Equine Department. Assists rural entities and individuals with day-to-day accountancy and taxation affairs, HMRC enquiries, and complex farm tax enquiries for other accountants and solicitors. Grew up on the family farm in Bramdean with a passion for horses.

    Tax Director

    Joined Butler & Co Tax Team in 2012, progressed to Tax Director in the Farm & Equine Department. Member of the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT), holds a Master's Degree from the University of Bristol, and has achieved Certificate in Probate and Estate Administration. Grew up surrounded by horses on the family farm and continues to ride. Specialises in Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax, probate matters and deceased estates, and structuring equine businesses for tax efficiency.

    Qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1980. Founded Butler & Co Chartered Accountants in 1986 from the family farmhouse, set up Alresford office in 1992. Author of Tax Planning for Farm and Land Diversification (10th edition to be published in 2025), Equine Tax Planning including Butler's Equine Tax Planning (3rd edition), and co-author of Stanley: Taxation of Farmers and Landowners. Editor of Farm Tax Brief since 2017 (published 10 times per year).
